I am an Ultra-Trail Runner – I thrive on extreme challenges and am passionate about our environment.
I am running the entire Te Ara Hura trail in ONE DAY - That’s 100 kilometres! On Saturday 5th of September 2020 to raise funds for Native Bird Rescue a wildlife rehabilitation facility on Waiheke Island
ABOUT:
Te Ara Hura trail is a marked trail that surrounds Waiheke Island, it passes around the coastline through native bush and historic sites.
Native Bird Rescue on Waiheke Island rely primarily on funding and donations for medical supplies and equipment, specialised food (that’s quite a budget because New Zealand indigenous birds eat nectar, fruit, live insects, fish and the raptors eat meat), and further facility developments.
They are committed to help the recovering birds and release them in their environment as soon as possible. It can take a week or depending on the injury, it could take months.
As a physio, I can tell that I know how much the time and investment it takes for an injury to heal and I can see how much effort they are putting into it. They need appropriate facilities to host all kind of birds (Kereru, shag, morepork and kingfisher are not living in the same amenity).
They also create an inclusive and diverse volunteer program, ranging from avian veterinarians, youth to elderly and people with physical, mental, and emotional health issues and disabilities.
They hope to inspire veterinary professionals to develop and ultimately incorporate avian medicine skills in standard vet clinics.
The money I will raise would be for the purpose of
• Build an Outdoor Pool for their Seabird Habitat: The little blue penguins, pied shags and other seabirds in the Seabird Habitat need a physio pool for building stamina before release.
Here is the Facebook event if you would like to come and support me or to follow my training and the run itself : https://www.facebook.com/events/716524942514465
Thank you for the support.
I’m Nicolas from Belgium. Back home I’m a physiotherapist.
I’ve been on Waiheke Island for a few months already and have loved running around these fabulous tracks.
