Participating in More FM Mount Everest Challenge 2022
Bay of Plenty
Some 20 years ago I was a victim in a high speed head-on car crash and after many years of intense pain, and many operations without success (and dependency on heavy narcotics) I took the final option two years ago to have a below knee leg amputation. Living with an amputation certainly brings its own challenges. I have wanted to do the Mt Everest Challenge for about 5 years now, but was always held back by clashes with surgeries I just had or were about to have. I’m now 8 months post a revision surgery and decided there was nothing going to stop me this time.! Bring it on!!
All done ! 31 March 2022
Yay!! So today was my last climb for the Mount Everest Challenge x 2 for me, not bad for an amputee eh. I did 76 climbs in 46 days and only had 7 days off throughout the 46 days to rest. Wow!!...... that even blows me away when I see it written down on paper. I have really enjoyed the challenge but some days were more of a struggle than others that’s for sure, and I have decided it doesn’t matter how many times you go up the Mount it just doesn’t seem to get any easier, why is that I wonder?
My last 6 climbs have been uneventful until I got a blister on the end of my limb just before my final 3 climbs – Bugger !! Because I have become so active doing so many climbs my limb has changed shape so my prosthetic doesn’t fit quite as well now and this is probably why I ended up with a huge blister on the end of my limb. My very last climb for the challenge was today, and I did the steep track up from the base track…. I believe some call this the goat track, which actually wasn’t that bad at all but looks like it could be very slippery after rain, I then went on up the 4x4 track then up though the rock track and back down the stairs. Blister and all - had to refit my prosthetic 3 x times! Thank goodness this was my last climb; I have been so worried right through this whole challenge that my skin may not hold up to it. I’m so glad to say I’ve done it, I have knocked the bugger off, not once but twice!!
Over the last 7 weeks I have noticed how much stronger I feel going up and down the stairs, and my balance has improved so much which has improved my walking on my prosthetic, which is great but I still have to remove my prosthetic once I’ve completed my walk for the rest of the day to rest my limb as it gets quite sore.
What is frustrating is I’ve done all this work AND I haven’t LOST any WEIGHT!!.
Thank-you once again to all my wonderful family, friends and supporter’s – to those who have generously donated to this awesome cause your contributions have made a difference. Your support means the Good Neighbour Charity can continue to touch the lives of those that have hit a bump in the road and it also can make a difference in people’s lives where significant change is taking place. Also I can’t thank enough those of you that have supported me by driving me to and from the mount (Freedom Drivers and Steve)
The Mount Everest Challenge is back for 2022. Climb the Mount 38 times in 50 days to raise money for Good Neighbour.
Thank you Heather for your kind donation, this is truly appreciate.
Thank you so much Tony for your generous donation, so very much appreciated and it's going to such a great cause. 🤔🤣Yes, you are so right, it is a nice break away from the old fella.😂🤣 Looking forward to catching up one day soonish, love ya🥰❤️
Thank-you so much Alison for your generous donation it is very much appreciated and going to a worthy cause. I have really been enjoying this challenge, and it has certainly taken me out of my comfort zone not only physically but also mentally. Thank you once again. Happy climbing.
Thank you Kanak, for you kind donation. I am still enjoying the climb and don't think I will ever get sick of the views.
Hi Jennifer and John, thank-you so much for your kind donation - it is very much appreciated and going to a good cause. This has been a good challenge for me as it has taken me right outside my comfort zone, having to refit my prosthetic a couple of times each climb, but it is a nice feeling being able to help others in our community while I'm exercising and enjoying our lovely Mount. I finished the challenge (38 climbs) on the 9th of March and decided to do it again- crazy eh! – surely it must start getting easier soon? As of today I’ve done 15 out of the 2nd round of 38. Fingers crossed my skin lasts the distance in my prosthetic and I can avoid covid before the finish by the 3rd April. Something I’ve got to focus on is how far I’ve come, not how far I’ve got to go. Once again, thanks very much - looking forward to you guys joining me on one of my climbs, love to you both ……😊
