Harry Boorman of Auckland has challenged me to a Waikato vs Auckland birding competition. How many can I see in 24 hours in the Waikato?
Waikato
The Waikato is primarily known for its lush grass and numerous bovine residents, however there are lots of birds around too! Since moving here from Canada in 2015, I have enjoyed exploring the Waikato's diverse habitats from the Coromandel south to Great Lake Taupo, and the Waitomo Caves east to the Kaimai Ranges. A while ago I accidentally set the record for species seen here in one day (72), however that was soon after beaten by a motivated group of teenagers who managed 75 species. With spring in full swing, and the eBird NZ Bird Atlas cranked into high gear, I figure it's time to take the record back and raise funds for the Hamilton Junior Naturalists while I'm at it. I have given several talks for this group and they are a fantastic bunch of kids that have contributed a lot to local conservation education and initiatives. These donations should help fund fieldtrips, as well as the upkeep of their privately owned lodge near Kawhia. So please support me, by supporting this amazing cause!
Since being a junior naturalist myself (in Canada), I know how important it is to foster enthusiasm for the outdoors (and especially birds!) in young people. This is an amazing club!
