Help us to help them! Sean and Colleen walking 1000km in Spain to raise awareness and funds for Multiple Sclerosis in New Zealand
Taranaki
Two sixty-something kiwis are attempting to walk 1000km carrying everything we need on our backs. We are starting the Via de la Plata Camino in Seville, southern Spain , on 9 March 2024 and are hoping to reach Santiago de Compostela, northwest Spain, towards the end of April. The walk will take us through many beautiful cities, Salamanca, Merida, Ourense and also through many small villages. The route is fairly remote, meanders through stunning scenery, and has the most interesting history to explore. Roman ruins, bridges, roads, amphitheaters and aquaducts that have survived thousands of years. Enormous Catholic Cathedrals built inside the ruins of Moorish Mosques. And so much more.
While we walk we aim to raise awareness, and some much needed funds, for Multiple Sclerosis in New Zealand. MS shows no discrimination as to who it attacks and Multiple Sclerosis New Zealand and MS Taranaki are there to assist, educate and guide them. MSNZ needs all the funds that we can raise to enable them to carry on doing the fantastic job that they do supporting people with MS and their families and carers. We have lived in Taranaki region for 25 years and we are thrilled to know that funds raised will help people living in Taranaki.
Wow! How time flies 29 March 2024
I can’t believe that it’s been 2 weeks since our last update! We have been extremely lucky with the weather, rain has arrived today and we think it will be around for a few days, it has also got extremely cold, apparently there has been snow a few days ahead of us! We have met a kiwi couple that we have walked with for a few days and so many other peregrinos that we have spent time with over the past 2 weeks. We have been walking through beautiful farmlands and parks. We spent a day in Merida touring around the Roman ruins - so amazing to see such ancient sites, with many buildings still standing. The wildflowers have been beautiful, the sunrises spectacular. We are amazed at the interest that has been shown in our message about Multiple Sclerosis, it is encouraging to find people from other countries wanting to donate to our cause. We knew that this walk was going to be harder than other Caminos that we have done, and we have found some days harder with the heat and some steep climbs. But the countryside unfolding in front of us, and the fascinating history around us combined with the camaraderie of our fellow peregrinos has got us through.
This week is Semana Santa, the week before Easter, and it us widely celebrated in Spain. Accommodation is difficult to find as the locals are on holiday all week and all go to town, small or large, to enjoy the processions and the festivals . It is so lovely to see families out enjoying themselves .
Thank you so much for your donation Liz, we really do appreciate it . Love to all of you
