Day 6 done, Mike Cosgrove ,walking the Nullarbor for mental health #gumbootfriday all on his own!! Huge effort. Tonight we are staying at Nullarbor Roadhouse, in a nice comfy clean room. A bit of a luxury after 2 nights in the wilderness. He did 42ks today so just a tad short of 50 but he had 7 ks in credit so he's only be 1k short but he'll no doubt catch it up somewhere else. Washing to do now and see what we can restock in the way of supplies at the roadhouse👍🏼

      2 May 2023
    Main image

Day 1, Mike Cosgrove kicked it in the butt!! 50ks down and only 1150ks to go🙄🤔 If you say that really really fast it doesn't sound so far. He trucked along real well with a grueling headwind and a couple of nasty freezing cold showers of rain. But like the trooper he is he just kept on keeping on. Rest now then a meal and shower and sweet dreams 😴 #gumbootfriday Walking the Nullarbor for mental health!!

  • Ten days to go.

      16 April 2023
    Main image

Ten days to go before we set off for the Nullarbor challenge. We almost have all our supplies we need from NZ. I have had my main 2x pairs of shoes resoled thanks to Quality Shoe Repairs in Hamilton and got my clothing all together.

The photo shows breakfast and some of the nutrition bars, gels etc that I will require.

Some interesting facts about the Nullarbor:

Nullarbor is Latin for Nullas, Arbor meaning No Trees. The Nullarbor sits on one of the largest limestone rocks in the world. It covers 200,000 Sq kilometers.

The Nullarbor is home to some 100 000 camels, almost all which are feral. They were used for transport when building the railways across the country then set free to roam.

The largest sheep station in the world resides on the western side of the Nullarbor and is 2.5 million acres in size.

In summer the temperature can rise to 50 degrees C and fall well below zero in the winter.

Arguably the longest straight in the world is on the Nullarbor at 146.6 kilometers long. I expect to take 3 days to walk this one straight.

The longest golf course in the world is on the Nullarbor and is an 18 hole 72 par course and is 1365 kilometers long. It takes about 5 days to complete.

The largest kangaroos (the big red) live on the Nullarbor.

I hope you all find this as interesting as I did 😊

Again thank you all so much for your super kind donations to our give a little page where all donations will be going to support Gumboot Friday.

Please share this with your friends and family and encourage them to join in and follow our Walking the Nullarbor for Mental Health blogs on Facebook and Instagram. Also this Give a Little page.

  • How important are my shoes?

      23 March 2023
    Main image

As you can tell from the photo my right shoe is much taller than the left one. Due to an accident 9 and a half years ago and after many surgeries I finished up with a leg 48mm shorter. My main problem with this when walking is uneven ground. Because of the shoe height I find it so easy to roll that particular foot. It's important I watch that foot go to the ground almost every step.

All my right footwear are lifted to compensate the height difference.

It's nearly half way through March and training is going well. I started training in earnest on the 1st of December with 10k days and have now worked up to a marathon every second day with the odd 50k thrown in for good measure. Apart from a persisting blister on one of my toes all is well body wise. I foolishly was experimenting with shoes and different insoles to acquire this blister.

We still have several weeks of training to do before we leave for Ceduna in South Australia to start the walk. We travel over on the 28th of April, start in Ceduna and finish in Norseman West Australia 25 days later.

Check out the image with my training to date to get an idea what's involved to get to this stage.

Please help support by donating to Gumboot Friday. All funds raised will go to this charity.

Thank you all who have supported with donations to Gumboot Friday, you are all so special and I know your help will save precious lives.
