We are walking 60km from Wellington to Waikanae to raise awareness and money for Sexual Abuse Help Wellington on the 27th of June.
Wellington
2020 has not been kind and with the lockdown keeping us confined in our houses for five weeks, we naturally went a little bit crazy. One idea that we had during the lockdown was to commit to a 60km walk from Wellington to Waikanae in one day. Inspired by the likes of Sir Captain Tom, a 100-year-old man who walked 100 laps of his garden and Ed Jackson, the quadriplegic who climbed Mt Everest in his home, we thought we too should do something to raise money and awareness for a cause that we care about.
Sexual abuse is something that has either directly or indirectly affected all of us and during lockdown in New Zealand, sexual abuse reports increased by 22%. We believe that sexual abuse is an issue that is not talked about enough and the services to support victims go unnoticed.
While searching for a charity to donate to we came across Sexual Abuse Help Wellington. They support people in Wellington City, Porirua, and Kapiti Coast who are experiencing sexual or domestic abuse. And fittingly we will be walking through all those places! Please consider donating so that they can continue to supply people with counseling, helplines and important social work.
The COVID-19 lockdown has caused an increase in sexual abuse and domestic violence in New Zealand and across the globe. It is important to us because we have all been affected either directly or indirectly by sexual abuse.
Okay this is getting crazy! 23 June 2020
