Walking 37kms in a day around the hills of Wellington to fundraise for UNICEF Ukraine
Wellington
In January 2022 a group of 30 walked from Wellington's south coast all the way back to Mount Kaukau, a 10 hour 37 km journey that raised $21K for the Cancer Society. That was the Sea to Skyline Challenge (www.youtube.com/watch/?v=AFHhYbTmH8U).
Now some of the same group of Sea to Skyliners are going to make use of their accumulated fitness to do the walk in reverse to raise funds for children in Ukraine. It will be a little easier heading down to the coast but still a significant challenge given the day will start with a climb up Mount Kaukau!
The aim is for 20 of us to complete the walk which will collectively amount to 750kms, the distance between Kyiv and the Polish border that so many families have had to travel to escape the war. We all feel so hopeless and disgusted at the dreadful invasion of Ukraine and just want to do our bit to help.
The war in Ukraine poses an immediate threat to children. 4.3 million children have been displaced, one of the fastest large-scale displacements of children since World War II. Such large displacements could have lasting consequences for generations to come. UNICEF are providing three services for the children of Ukraine (see photos):
- scaling up access to safe water
- prepositioning health, hygeine and emergency education supplies
- providing psychosocial care
Date - Good Friday 15th April 2022 (contingency day Sun 24th April)
Thank you everybody - we beat our $10,000 target 15 May 2022
Thank you to everyone that donated.
I would also like to pass on this message from UNICEF Aotearoa:
"just how grateful we were to receive your tremendous support, and obviously the support from your group of 20 walkers, and all 178 donors who gave generously to your Skyline to Sea Challenge in support of Ukrainian children and families. What an amazing feat to achieve. And to see that your fundraising target kept climbing, as more and more people jumped on board and donated was amazing too.
I can see in the photos on your givealittle page that the event was a real family affair, involving young and old. This is fitting, as the incredible sum of money you’ve raised will be used to support both Ukrainian children, and families, doing it tough right now".
Thank you.
Thank you Marilyn, much appreciated.
