Abbeyfield New Zealand

Abbeyfield New Zealand

Abbeyfield provides affordable shared housing for older people, supporting independent living with light support and companionship.

Nationwide

New Zealand’s 65+ population is projected to grow from 874,000 in 2024 to 2,128,300 by 2074.

By 2048, 40 percent of retirees in Aotearoa are expected to be renting.

Social isolation is linked to a 50 percent increased risk of dementia, and loneliness to a 40 percent increased risk.

Each Abbeyfield house may save Te Whatu Ora about 12 million or more in rest home subsidies over a 50-year lifetime by delaying residential care entry.

Help older people live with dignity, independence, and connection

As New Zealand's population ages, the need for affordable, supportive housing for older people continues to grow. Abbeyfield houses provide more than accommodation. They offer companionship, independence, security, and a sense of belonging.

Many older people find themselves caught between living alone without support and moving into rest home care before it is truly needed. Abbeyfield fills this gap, enabling residents to maintain their independence while enjoying the benefits of a caring community.

Abbeyfield New Zealand is a volunteer-run charity providing affordable, supported rental housing for older people who want to live independently, stay connected, and enjoy a secure home that is fit for purpose. Abbeyfield has 34 years of experience, with 16 houses and 194 units already established in New Zealand.

What makes Abbeyfield unique is that each house is supported and governed by dedicated local volunteers who generously give their time and expertise to help create welcoming, sustainable communities for older people.

Your donation will help support existing Abbeyfield houses and assist the development of new homes throughout New Zealand, ensuring more older people can access this housing option in the future. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps create places where older people can continue to live fulfilling, connected, and dignified lives.

Thank you for supporting Abbeyfield and the volunteers who make this work possible.
