Help more kiwi kids to attend our awesome school - where children are respected and reach their full potential.

Ako is a small future-focused, play-based primary school in Northcote, Auckland and provides a learning environment immersed in nature and puts children at the centre of their own learning.

We started Ako as our education system is failing many New Zealand children. We want to empower tamariki to take control of their own learning through the power of play and inquiry. Ultimately, we want to create communities of creative, joyful, compassionate life-long learners who use courageous and innovative thinking to build a harmonious and sustainable world.

We have set out to provide the best learning environment for our tamariki, now, and for their future. It is built on strong evidence of how children learn best.

We have had to start as a private school and many families wanting to send their children to our school cannot afford the contributions we need to be able to operate (a minimum of $11,000 a year per child). We currently provide partial scholarships to two thirds of our families and want to be able to continue to make our school accessible to all. We are therefore need your help to provide those scholarships.

And through the success of Ako, we will create a model of a successful future-focused school. This will ultimately inspire change in our education system so that more children in New Zealand can realise their full potential and be ready to embrace the challenges of the future.

More about us

Ako, the little bush school in the big city, is a full primary school that provides tamariki between 5-13 years with a learning space, as an alternative to traditional schools. Ako is play-based, child-led, passion-driven, and outdoor-centered.
