Reintroducing kiwi onto Arapaoa Island in the Marlborough Sounds.
Marlborough
Arapaoa Kiwi Trust's vision is to return kiwi to Arapaoa Island in the Marlborough Sounds in approximately 3 years. This requires the elimination of stoats and feral cats to restore and protect the environment and habitat for the kiwi to be reintroduced. Arapaoa Island is the second largest island in the Marlborough Sounds, 7500 ha, 28kms end to end.
The project has 1140 traps and 60 trail cameras installed (as at January 2025), extending the length of the island. These are all serviced monthly by part-time contractors and volunteers.
Arapaoa Kiwi requires funding to service all these traps and monitor trail cameras every month. As we prepare for the introduction of kiwi in approximately 3 years, the regular monitoring of traps and cameras by our part-time contract trappers remains paramount to the project.
The Arapaoa Kiwi Trust is proud to have completed 4 successful years of the project and has achieved all our operational goals to date. We are on target with our vision to reintroduce kiwi onto Arapaoa Island.
All donations go directly to establishing a large-scale population of kiwi on Arapaoa Island. Thank you for your donation supporting our mahi.
Our goal is to restore Arapaoa Island in the Marlborough Sounds to its natural environment and reintroduce, protect and keep safe our kiwi for generations to come.
