Help us bring back the birds and restore biodiversity at Te Hokiauau/Big Bay in northern Fiordland
Southland
Help us protect a unique and diverse environment in Fiordland, New Zealand. Our Charitable Trust is dedicated to protecting and restoring the ecosytem at Te Hokiauau/Big Bay. The suppression of rats, stoats, and possums to low levels across 1500ha around Waiuna Lagoon helps protect vulnerable native bird species including threatened species such as fernbird, bittern, rail, kaka, and invertebrates and skinks.
With your help we can reduce the high predator numbers that are severely impacting vulnerable native species. There is an opportunity to act quickly to retain these special ecosystem components before they're lost forever.
Located in northern Fiordland and a four-day walk from the nearest road, Te Hokiauau/Big Bay is home to unique native ecosystems found no where else in New Zealand.
The Big Bay Awarua Conservation Trust has established a trap and bait station network to control rats, possums, and stoats to low levels across 1500ha around Waiuna Lagoon. This ensures the protection of rare and threatened species including the Big Bay skink, mātātā/fernbird, kōtuku/white heron, matuku-hūrepo/bittern, and kākā. Numerous other forest birds including korimako/bellbird, riroriro/grey warbler, and ngirungiru/South Island tomtit also benefit, along with resident invertebrates and plants.
We seek donations to support our ecosystem restoration and predator control work including flights for volunteers, bait for our traps, and monitoring equipment. Thank you for your support.
