WOW, what a week...It really has been raining cats and kittens at WCK it seems this week.

Here are 2 of our latest incoming. They are 4 weeks old and there is 2 more of this litter to come in over the next day or 2. These have come in from a property in Masterton, were 2 stray queens have taken up residency lately. Unfortunately with the beginning of winter here and mum struggling to cope with the babies, WCK has made the call to remove them from mum as we can. Both females will stay on at the property, desexed over the coming weeks once trapped and the owner will continue there care, hopefully allowing them some peace and comfort in their lives. As much as these 2 babies are beyond cute...they never should have been born. Due to them being so young, they are currently on milk powder to feed. They need de-worming and de-fleaing and of course down the track desexing and vaccinating so they can be adopted out.

  • A Great outcome for 2 lost boys...

This is the sort of outcome that really warms the hearts of those at WCK, while its not everyone cup of tea and we appreciate that (there are many benefits for all involved)

    Meet Pickles and Branston

We first got a call in late April in regards to a property just out of Featherston owned by an amazing couple Ian and Tess Mallet. They had come across a wee tabby "Pickles" frequenting their Hay barn...We lent them a trap and once caught they desexed and chipped this wee boy and set about releasing him back to the barn...within a couple of weeks, it seems who ever dumped Pickles had dumped another. Once again the trap goes out, and this wonderful couple set about trapping, desexing, chipping and releasing "Branston" back out with his brother.

These boys are only a young and without the kindness shown by the Mallets had a very uncertain future. One of possible starvation, fighting with the spread of disease from other "stray cats" and roaming to find queens on heat. They will now have a happy, healthy long life. While keeping a couple of barn cats might not be everyone's idea....keeping a couple of desexed barn cats helps to keep others away from taking that territory, slows the breeding of unowned strays and most importantly saving a life, from an animal that never asked to born, but purely was due to someone not caring enough to desex their pet and once its no longer cute. Dump it.

Community attitudes in the Wairarapa are beginning to change for the positive, with our regions growing population of "community cats", with many calls now coming into WCK purely for advice, not just surrenders. Far to often we have collected cats and kits on the side of the road, with horrific injuries, disease ridden and many others just driving by, this annoys us the most. It doesn't take much to save a life, to help, and in the case where they cant always be saved...can leave this world with a kind hand, who even for a short time cared enough to help and end the suffering, the starvation, the spread of disease. So a huge Thankyou to the Mallets and all the rest of the Wairarapa Community who are stepping up to help. It wont be over night but long term, together we can make a difference!!!

  • Stolen trap

Its always a pity when people think it is OK to take something that is not theirs! One of our fosterers had her trap stolen that she was using to trap kitties in Masterton. Even though it was in an area where members of the public shouldn't be freely accessing. This has meant Wairarapa Community Kitties has to find another trap for her to use so this fosterer can continue to help the kitties of the Wairarapa. We would preferred to have spent our money directly on the care of the cats and kittens but sometimes there are capital costs required also.

The particular trap is the same as the one in the picture - not easily found in NZ it turns out, though similar ones are available.

  • Kitten season

Kitten season has seen us inundated with kittens and pregnant Queens. Many come in healthy, go to the fosterer until they are at weight for desexing and rehoming. But there are a few who have a little further to go. Such is the case with 4 barn kitties who were recently trapped outside of Carterton with help from the land owners - we love when the landowners take responsibility and are willing to help out! Although these wee guys seemed healthy enough the sad reality was that one went into hospital on oxygen for inflamed lungs, the rest went off to the vets as well for loose stools, vomiting, being off their food and one was dehydrated despite having constant access to clean water.

They have since made a full recovery (luckliy) and are in foster care until they are ready for rehoming.

The barn kittens mother was speyed and returned to her barn as vermin hunter extraordinaire.
