Headland

Headland

With your support, Headland is building a home for the best of New Zealand writing. Readers, writers, and pioneers are all invited.

Wellington

Headland gives new voice to New Zealand writers, and brings our stories to the world.

The only New Zealand literary journal to publish to Kindle, we produce a digital, quarterly anthology of short stories, including creative non-fiction. Each issue offers work by previously unpublished authors alongside more established writers - all reviewed 'blind' by our team, so that the story alone must stand on its own merits. Each issue also includes up to 25% international content, so that Kiwi writers find new markets and Kiwi readers find new favourites.

Headland operates as a non-profit, and every member of our team is a volunteer. But our dream is to pay our writers for the world-class stories that they allow us to publish, and to be an effective and professional advocate for their work. We currently offer an annual cash prize for the best of the work we receive and for the best newcomer of the year, but there is more to be done.

Making a gift to Headland keeps us in business, ensures that these prizes can be awarded, and gets us closer to our ultimate goal: paying every writer for the privilege of sharing their work. And what is good for writers is good for readers too.
