Supporting the repairs to the Hauraki Rail Trail in the wake of devastating cyclone storm damage
Waikato
Cyclone Gabrielle hit the Hauraki Rail Trail and surrounding region in the early hours of 14 February, causing the floodgates at Criterion Bridge, Paeroa to be used for the first time in their history to protect the township. While there was some damage across the 160 km network, the hardest hit was between Waikino and Waihi, where one section of the Trail has slipped completely, and large tomos appeared that were waist deep. The Team has worked hard to rehabilitate the Trail after the severe impacts of the cyclone, and we are grateful to local volunteer groups who are offering to help with the clean-up. Some immediate but minor remedial works are underway across the Trail Network, however full repairs will commence once funding is in place. Every donation, however modest, is a huge contribution. Thank you.
The Hauraki Rail Trail relies on the involvement of local communities to create and maintain an asset we can all be proud of. Every donation, however modest, is a huge contribution. Thank you.
