For the last 5 and a bit years i have been fortunate enough to be paid to do what im absolutely passionate about, supporting addicts into recovery! I have worked alongside some amazing people and witnessed some miraculous recoveries and some heartbreaking devastation.

Sadly, in my work I have found myself up against some very frustrating situations with our health system and I believe there are some areas where we can support people a whole lot better in Hawkes Bay.

I have taken a leap of faith and resigned from my job to throw all my energy into our new charitable trust. We have some beautiful, passionate people on our board of trustees who all share the same vision.

Some of the goals we hope to achieve for people affected by addiction in the Hawkes Bay are...

* Immediate response to crisis

* Support for whanau of addicts

* Pre-treatment support (including housing).

* Smoother transition to community post-treatment (including housing)

* Advocacy for addicts and whanau

* Growing community based natural supports

* Increase peer support workers

* Prevention and education

* Reducing stigma

Our starting point will be a community recovery hub. Like a one-stop recovery shop where we will have peer support groups for addicts, parents/loved ones of addicts and children of addicts. We will have an advocacy service and peer support workers based out of the recovery hub where we can walk alongside people and link them into other services and make sure they get the help they need.

We have practical and cost effective solutions address the areas where our health system falls short.

The anology I love is that when a flower doesnt grow, we change the environment that it grows in. Sadly we have a health system that is just trying to fix flowers. We believe the solutions are community based where we can create an environment where people can grow to their full potential.
