Our goal is to support whaanau and schools to enable better life outcomes for tamariki.
Auckland
Kootuitui means weaving or connecting, and in this way, our strands work together to support whaanau and schools to improve outcomes for tamariki.
Kootuitui ki Papakura has four strands: Education, Health, Whaanau, and Financial Well-Being. Like Harakeke, these strands are intrinsically interconnected and interdependent, as illustrated by our logo and our name.
Kootuitui ki Papakura exists to redress the inequity in our community and improve the immediate, mid and lifelong outcomes of young people growing up in South Auckland.
Research has identified that these four key strands, when delivered together, can have a transformative impact on our children, their futures, and the community.
Kootuitui works at grassroots levels, providing direct support to our cluster of seven low-decile schools in Papakura: Papakura High School, Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa, Edmund Hillary School, Kereru Park Campus, Papakura Central School, Mangapikopiko School, and Te Taamatatanga o Pukekohekohe.
Due to the impact of Covid-19 in our community, we have extended our support to many other schools and whaanau residing in our Papakura and surrounding areas who are experiencing persistent poverty.
We are a charitable organisation comprising a collective of community representatives including Mana Whenua established in late 2015 to provide services for a cluster of schools in Papakura. Our goal is to support whānau and schools to enable better life outcomes for tamariki.
Our programme is an integration of three strands:
- Education is an Outreach of Manaiakalani and provides 1:1 digital learning for students (one device per student) and professional development for teachers to build their capacity and transform learning environments. Teaching and learning is visible via teacher websites and teacher and student blogs.
- Health is the provision of daily school health clinics in primary schools with nurses and whānau workers, and an enhanced health service in the secondary school which includes full-time nurses and youth worker and weekly GP hours.
- Homes: we work with whānau to enable safe and healthy homes. This strand is currently in development using a co-design approach to the design and testing of solutions, with whānau for whānau.
We benefit from the support of funders, partners and community organisations, and the commitment of the schools’ boards, leaders, teachers and staff.
Funds raised will be used to support needy families who are purchasing a digital device for their tamariki.
