Māpura Studios

Māpura Studios

Māpura Studios provides access to innovative art, dance, singing, music and Art Therapy programmes to people of all abilities in Auckland.

Auckland

Māpura Studios provides access for all to the therapeutic benefits of creativity. We are an inclusive community of singers, dancers, cartoonists, mixed-media, sculpture and visual artists – people who live with stroke affect, Aphasia, CP, neurological conditions, intellectual disability, deafness and low-vision. Everyone gets together and enjoys an environment where empowerment, playfulness and positivity are embedded in the culture.

We run events and exhibitions throughout the year, advocating for diversity, access and respect for outsider art. Over 400 people per week enjoy our subsidised / free classes across Tāmaki Makaurau and online. All ages, abilities, and ethnicities, find a home away from home here.

Māpura Studios is located in Morningside, Auckland, with groups in Avondale, Māngere, Manurewa, Ōtara, Ōtāhuhu, Orewa, Papakura, Penrose and Takapuna. We are an independent organisation, and receive no government funding. We are solely funded by donations, grants and the subsidised programme fees that we charge our participants.

More about us

We are administered by Panacea Arts Charitable Trust CC20808 which was founded in March 2000. Our studio is situated in Fowlds Park, Morningside, amongst leafy surrounds and with ample parking. Our incredible community of creatives enjoy a huge range of artistic expression. Our tutors and therapists are second-to-none holding many years of experience in art-making, therapy, and working with diverse and high-needs people groups.

We are the only creative space contracted to work with Art Therapy in Auckland Mens Prison at Paremoremo, which we are very proud of. And twice a year we run (fundraising permitting) our special and world-unique stroke Art Therapy programme we call 're-stART'. This was created back in 2010 when we developed it with the Brain Institute at Auckland University. We offer over 30 different creative programmes. Please see our website for details.

We love what we do!  8 July 2024

We just keep growing...here is a rare staff photo from summer. We now have over 30 staff, an amazing roster of volunteers and we welcome interns studying in related fields. Our 'off-site' classes now match our Morningside classes in number - wow. This year incredible opportunties for our artists keep rolling in, and there is much to celebrate as we enter winter, so keep tuned. You can stay up to date with our exhibitions and news by subscribing on our website www.mapurastudios.org.nz
