Michael Hill International Violin Competition

The Michael Hill International Violin Competition is New Zealand’s most prestigious music competition and one of the finest in the world.

Auckland

Founded in 2000, the biennial "Michael Hill" is recognised as one of the world's most compelling violin competitions. The fusion of spine-tingling performances, warm and enthusiastic audiences, breathtaking scenery and Kiwi hospitality create an unparalleled platform for competitor and audience member alike.

We take great pride in the knowledge that our laureates hold prestigious positions and carry on the glorious tradition of violin playing in its highest form.

Through our professional development programmes for competitors and New Zealand students, are committed to preparing the next generation for fruitful careers in music.

If you would like to make a donation and support the Competition's efforts to recognise and encourage excellence and prepare the next generation for fruitful careers in music, please do so via our Givealittle page.

More about us

The Hill Family Foundation for Arts and Music exists to encourage the appreciation of fine music and to proudly showcase the talents and works of New Zealand’s artists. The Foundation recognises and rewards excellence and it advances the education of young New Zealanders. The Hill Family Foundation for Arts and Music is committed to the future of the arts in New Zealand and is the umbrella organisation of five initiatives that are presented over three-year cycles in pursuit of enabling, encouraging, supporting, presenting and celebrating New Zealand art: the Michael Hill International Violin Competition and its associated Winners' Tour; the Whakatipu Music Festival, the National String Competition and the Instrument Bank.

The Michael Hill attracts live audiences of 7000 and its online video performance views exceed 1 million.

The Hill Family Foundation is a registered NZ Charity that provides the backbone funding to operate and deliver these initiatives. Believing in the necessity of community collaboration and investment, it seeks additional operating costs through grants, sponsorship and private donations.
