Nga Uruora’s vision is to bring Kapiti Island's dawn chorus back to the coast.

Nga Uruora – Kapiti Project Charitable Trust is a community based conservation project with a big work program and an even bigger vision. Set up in 1997 to reverse the drastic decline of coastal forest, we are aiming to create a continuous ribbon of bird-safe native forest running from Mackays Crossing to Pukerua Bay.

Through a unique agreement with KiwiRail and the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust, we look after over 80 hectares of coastal escarpment. We also have access to an area known as Perkins/Middle Run Farm under an agreement with the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Nga Uruora works closely with Te Araroa Wellington Trust who are building a walking track the length of the escarpment. A number of agencies support our work but we are particularly grateful to Greater Wellington Regional Council and the Kapiti Coast District Council.

Since its beginnings, Nga Uruora volunteers have been involved in a wide range of conservation work. In the past we operated two school based nurseries and have planted over 50,000 trees on the escarpment. Our last major planting has been along one of our main streams. Members have also led dune restoration work and have worked to enhance local penguin nesting habitat.

A key focus of recent work is now weed and animal pest control. In addition, we have built and now maintain a number of tracks on the escarpment. This includes the popular Kohekohe Loop track, accessed from Paekakariki.

In 2015, Nga Uruora became part of the Kapiti Coast Biodiversity project. Key activities being undertaken on the escarpment as part of this project are increasing animal pest control and studying lizard populations with an aim to increase their abundance.
