Help NZ Sailing Trust deliver more programmes
Auckland
A NZ outdoor education, youth development provider operating mainly in the Tīkapa Moana / Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Our NZ maritime environment is one of our greatest treasures and one that many in our communities have not experienced.
Our programmes encourage young New Zealanders to become active in the great outdoors. Being able to sail on and be a part of this environment instils a greater appreciation of the need to protect our marine environment. The Trust works in partnership with charities, schools and community groups offering programmes on board these iconic yachts. At the core of the Trust is a passion extending back to the campaigns of Sir Peter Blake which fired New Zealand’s imagination and appetite for adventure.
The NZ Sailing Trust programmes focus on participants overcoming and embracing social and personal challenges. Together, we provide experiences that bring to life the values of leadership, courage, teamwork, communication, determination and respect.
We deliver essential life skills that inspire our youth and gives them an opportunity to build confidence and self-belief. As an individual and a team member, they are left with a great sense of achievement at the end of their journey and respect to Kaitiakitanga.
The NZ Sailing Trust’s mission and goals are to:
- To use Sir Peter Blakes historic sailing vessels to provide experiences for young New Zealanders that bring to life the values of leadership, courage and teamwork
- To help ensure the future of New Zealand’s maritime industry through providing opportunities to young New Zealand sailors.
- Preserve the legacy of the significant sailing vessels of Sir Peter Blake and his teams
YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT JOURNEYS
For many students sailing and living on board is a completely new expereince, it takes them out of their comfort zone presenting opportunities for learning. The NZ Sailing Trust works alongside schools and charities to determine particular areas of learning to focus on for their students, from there, the style of sailing the vessel and activities on board are selected. Some 8000 young kiwi’s have now benefited from our youth programmes and sailing experiences.
Steinlager 2 and Lion NZ are unique platforms that are utilised to deliver these programmes. Learning to navigate, sail, cook and live on a maxi yacht leaves each student, at the end of their journey, with a great sense of achievement.
The maritime environment is one of New Zealand’s greatest treasures, which many of our young people have not experienced, being able to sail on and be a part of this environment instils a greater appreciation of the need to protect our marine environment.
