Experiments not Exams - Exploring physics outside of the classroom.

Nationwide

The International Young Physicists’ Tournament, IYPT, is the World Cup of Physics (honest - ask Google) and a prestigious global competition for high school students. Last year it produced more Ellison Scholars than any other international science competition.

IYPT is different because it is research based. There is no curriculum to learn and there are no exams to sit. Instead, students investigate open-ended problems through designing and carrying out experiments and comparing their results to their digitally modelling theory. As each problem has several possible solutions, students learn to make decisions, evaluate process, and defend their thinking. Thy realise how to handle ambiguity and come to understand that mistakes are a source of insight, not a sign of failure.

Will you help us expand opportunities for students to try IYPT for themselves in workshops and clubs across the country? Investigating IYPT problems benefits ALL advanced physics students through reinforcement and extension of the curriculum. It helps them discover which topics they love before choosing a specialism and develops valuable career skills while they do it.

The problems for 2027 are here https://iypt.org.nz/?page_id=637

And some of our alumni tell how IYPT change their lives here https://iypt.org.nz/?page_id=852

Your donation will be used to provide venues and equipment for IYPT student events and experiments. Thanks.

More about us

We enrich high school physics through extra-curricular clubs, encouraging students into STEM careers.

Our programmes uses the research problems of the International Young Physicists' Tournament, IYPT, in workshops and clubs. Plus we select, train and take Team NZ(physics) to compete in IYPT globally every year. IYPT 2027 is in Auckland!
