“Riro taonga mai, hoki taonga atu.”
“We receive valuable resources from Papatūānuku, we return valuable resources to her.”
Para Kore Marae Incorporated is a community-based, not-for- profit, Māori organisation (by Māori, for Māori) established to deliver waste minimisation education and training on marae throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Our organisation seeks to create behaviour change that diverts waste from landfills, reduces water and air pollution and educates the public to reduce litter. Para Kore is a Māori organisation and its programme is grounded within the framework of kaupapa and tikanga Māori.
Para Kore has established waste minimisation systems on over 300 marae, kōhanga and kura across thirteen regions. Nationally, marae have diverted more than 172,000 kgs of waste from landfills. By 2025, Para Kore aims to be available to all 768 marae across the country and to be
inspiring committed zero waste behaviours throughout Māoridom.
Para Kore embraces the tikanga of caring for Ranginui and Papatūānuku. We understand that dumping waste in landfills, burning rubbish on our marae and littering is a waste of valuable resources, pollutes our environment and is harmful to us all.
Para Kore supports marae to regenerate Papatūānuku by eliminating waste and returning organic nutrients to the earth. We understand that composting restores the health of soils and enables us to grow our own kai.
Para Kore sees a future where whānau, hapū, iwi, Māori industry, Māori educational institutions and Māori society at large take an active and leading role as zero waste champions to support Aotearoa to protect and nurture our natural environment.
