Poems in the Waiting Room distributes free poetry cards to medical waiting rooms, rest homes, hospices and prisons every season.
Otago
The poetry cards feature 8-10 poems including a children's poem and a haiku, for those short waits! Poems are sourced nationally and internationally.
We printed and delivered our first edition - 500 cards - during the summer of 2008. We're currently printing 8200 cards each season and posting them out to 630 GP practices,457 Rest Homes, 8 prisons, and 10 hospices. Each seasonal edition is also transcribed into braille and distributed as booklets to members of our sight impaired community. PitWR(NZ) relies solely on donations and successful grant applications to fund its two costs – postage and printing.
With the increased usage of cellphones as 'reading' material in waiting rooms Poems in the Waiting Room(NZ)ceased publication in 2021 after the 50th edition. Now as Poetryinmotion we're taking poetry off the page and spreading it throughout our Dunedin community. Look out for poems painted on steps and seats, PoARTry exhibitions, street poetry................
