The Queen Mary Historic Reserve Charitable Trust is developing the amazing Soldiers Block, bringing to life the experiences of the past
Canterbury
Opened to treat returning soldiers in 1916, the Soldiers Block and the greater Queen Mary Hospital was closed in 2003 after a long history of treating the horrors of war and the challenges of drug and alcohol addiction. With community support, the restored Soldiers Block was reopened as a community facility on ANZAC Day 2025, a $3.6m project
Working with the team at Weta Workshops, the trust has designed an immersive experience to respect the experiences of the patients, doctors, nurses, the families and the community.
Themed as 'From Darkness to Light' the experience will breath life into the building and it's palapale history
The Queen Mary Historic Reserve Charitable Trust is restoring and eventually operating the historic buildings on the old Queen Mary Hospital site. Stage 1 and 2 has restored the Soldiers Block, Stage 3 is to create an immersive experience designed by Weta
