Help the Tamahunga Trappers to restore the natural ecosystems of the Tamahunga forest and protect the kiwi that are returning to the maunga.
Auckland
Tamahunga Trappers was initially formed in January 2010, when several Matakana residents, local Forest & Bird members and Department of Conservation staff recognised the potential for an ecological restoration project at Tamahunga and began a trapping program, focusing on mustelids (ferets, stoats and weasles).
Our vision is to restore the natural ecosystems of the maunga and to encourage enjoyment and appreciation of the bush by the community.
The Tamahunga Trappers relies on our network of volunteers, as well as donations and sponsorship. The main focus of our work is pest control, servicing and maintain a network of traps around the maunga.
The reduction in predators has allowed many bird species to begin to recover. From 2023, kiwi are being returned to the forest, after an absence of >40 years.
We formed in 2010 with the intention of protecting, restoring and advocating for Mt Tamahunga. We have been carrying out predator control for over 10 years, allowing us to finally translocate kiwi back to Tamahunga from 2023.
