The Story Store Trust (Te Manu Māutauranga) - making a positive impact on children's love of reading in school libraries.
Auckland
Every child deserves excellent school library books - but not every school can fill their library with books that children want to read. That's where Story Store Te Manu Māutauranga comes in.
Story Store is a registered charitable trust, which acquires excellent condition donated second-hand children's books, and makes them available, for free, to school libraries that are under-resourced.
Story Store is the brainchild of Joanna Baynes, a school librarian with 35 years' expertise - her knowledge of children's books, and what children love to read is second to none.
At our welcoming and organised space in Onehunga, Auckland, our shelves are stocked with over 5,000 fabulous children's books that were all donated to us by children, families/whānau and school communities who gave Story Store the books they loved reading but no longer wished to keep.
The Story Store team has seen such joy on the faces of school library staff who visit us, when they find a book that is expensive, out of print, or which a child has specifically requested. Children have written to thank us for giving their library a particular book they had waited a long time to enjoy.
Your donation will help Story Store meet its operating costs, purchase library-specific equipment, and keep growing!
By donating to Story Store, you will have a direct positive impact on a child's enjoyment of reading, for pleasure, in their school library.

12,000 books donated! 29 August 2026
In the three years since Story Store's humble beginnings, we have never looked so GOOD!
Our shelves are currently heaving under the glorious weight of more than 5,000 as-new children's books. All were donated to Story Store by generous individuals, families, communities and local school book drives. Our volunteers have sorted, catalogued and shelved these with care. Every title is in the right place. Every book bears our logo on a sticker. Every cute book mark is ready to be slotted neatly between crisp pages by an excited young reader in their own school library.
Story Store's impact has grown, and it is real. We are making the joy of reading equitable and accessible for thousands of children around Auckland and the wider North Island. Our numbers speak for themselves...
Since 2024...
* Story Store has received over 12,000 donated, gently-loved, second-hand books.
* 7,000 of these have been selected "for free and for ever" by library staff and teachers from 53 schools.
* 13,000 children have benefited from Story Store's mission.
* Each visiting school has taken back around 150 books, to an approximate value of $2,000.
Story Store's mission is simple - we want ALL children to have access to books they will love to read, in their own school library. We are achieving that mission with the generosity of our very kind supporters. Thank you very much to you all!
