We are a group of trained volunteers, providing Search & Rescue services to the Police & R.C.C., for the lost, missing & injured
First established in the 1930's our organisation has provided volunteer services to the Police, and more recently the Rescue Coordination Centre, to search for the lost, missing and injured, and return them to their families.
As technology improves we are always looking at new equipment to see if it would help in our operations, and if so we look for funding.
Safety related equipment and clothing for our teams in the field, especially in extreme weather conditions, is another funding need.
We are the Volunteer arm to the two main Search and Rescue Organisations in NZ, NZ Police and The Rescue Coordination Centre. Searching for the lost, missing & injured, responding to Locator Beacon activations, and increasing numbers of Urban Search requests. We cover an area from Mount Bruce to Cape Palliser, and from the main Tararua Range to the East Coast. We are always in need of funds to replace worn equipment such as radios and repeaters, as well as provide safety related clothing and equipment for team members in the field.
Another rescure near Dundas in the Tararuas 19 May 2018
On April 16 we were asked to provide a team to assist Horowhenua SAR to locate two missing persons who had activated a personal locator beacon. Around midnight an Air Force NH 90 helicopter collected a team of 5 and flew them in to near Dundas hut in strong winds. As the team neared the hut the missing persons were located and three of our members went to assist in bringing them back to the hut, a slow walk in the wind with the rescued very weak. It was very cosy, with 10 people in a 6 bunk hut. It was nearly 30 hours later before the rescued pair were warm enough to be moved and the weather cleared enough for Amalgamated Helicopters to fly everyone out. Another two days off work for some.
