This is the story of Helen Hughes, her struggle initially as a scientist, and her impact on NZ’s environment
Nationwide
I have written a biography of Helen Hughes, who was NZ’s first Commissioner for the Environment in 1987. Her story shows her difficulty entering the workforce in the 1950s, after gaining two Master of Science degrees, in NZ and the US. She gained scientific credibility in Fiji, after following her husband there, with her four children. Returning to NZ, she worked on dealing with NZ’s water weeds. Her story also shows the development of NZ’s environmental movement and her interaction with politicians in the 1980s and 90s.
I have written the biography and assembled photos of Helen’s life, and the raised money will towards its editing and publication.
