Developing a novel cancer treatment for cats and dogs.
Palmerston North, Manawatu-Wanganui
Prof Swee Tan at the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute developed a novel cancer treatment that could potentially be used in people. Here at the Massey University School of Veterinary Science we are using the same principle to find a new treatment for cancer in cats and dogs. We have shown that the treatment is safe with few side effects. However, as the treatment involves giving 5 medicines each day, we now need to formulate the medicines into a single tasty treatment so that people can easily treat their pets. Once we have done this, we can use this to treat lots of dogs and cats and this will enable us to show whether or not the treatment works. By showing the treatment works in cats and dogs this will also provide good evidence that the treatment will work in people. Advantages of the treatment include having few side effects, being much safer to administer, and being cheap compared to most other cancer treatments. It is possible that the new treatment will allow many more dogs and cats to be treated for cancer as well as allowing more rapid development of this treatment for use in people.
Our initial goal is to develop a single tasty medicine that owners can easily give to cats and dogs. If we raise more money than our initial goal, we will then prove the medicine works by using it to treat lots of cats and dogs with cancer.

Initially I thought this story was going to be shared by going into the newspaper. Unfortunately due to a recent large amount of news, the story about this research and the link to givealittle has only just been reported. I therefore extended the page 3 months.
