In this strengths-based program, Tipu Skills for Life works intensively through a yearlong program to build self-worth and nurture the current strengths of the participants, the girls, to make lasting positive changes in their lives. We also commit to connecting with the whanau of the girls and their communities. Our vision statement is “To empower young people with Skills For Life to enable them to imagine and grow a positive future”
Phase 1 of our program is an intensive 8 weeks, with six girls with two facilitators. This runs either during school hours or after school, but in the school facility, and focuses on Identifying Emotions, Managing Anger, Self-Worth, Healthy Relationships
The outcome of presenting these topics is a tangible kete of life-skills which has the overall goal to help explore and create their vision and “Future Dream” – a big part of the program’s content.
Phase 2
Several years ago, we partnered with an Auckland group UPSIDE Youth Mentoring Aotearoa in order to offer yearlong mentoring to chosen participants. Girls who meet the criteria are paired with their female mentor for 12 months or longer. These mentors meet with the young person (mentees) for one to two hours every week for 48 weeks a year.
Tipu Skills for Life comes from a place of genuine interest in, and validation of people’s experiences, strengths, capacities, and aspirations.
Tipu Skills For Life is one of Good Neighbor food rescue recipients.
