Baby Georgeline photographed here was one of the orphaned newborns for whom lack of breast-feeding was life-threatening. Here she is, thriving on foster care and the nutritional supplies which our generous donors provided. Thank you.

Our follow up fund is up and running now to provide school fee payment for the older orphans. See http://givealittle.co.nz/cause/supportebolaorphans

This will be the last update posted here.

  • It is the last few days for donations to be received.....

Ruth will be leaving Liberia on 2nd January, so we will close the fund a few days prior to this to ensure she is able use the money before she leaves. She has a plan to use the remainder of the donations for Elizabeth's informal orphanage, and for the "Caring Nurses for Disease Monitoring" welfare program.

  • Welfare outreach for the very young.....

      28 December 2014

When providing food grants to carers and Chrstmas present for the children, Ruth noticed that the youngest were at risk of malnutrition. At least one child had obvious protein deficiency, and it is common for breast-fed babies to die if they lose their mother. Milk formula or protein-rich supplements are very expensive and difficult to find. Also, the carers may need education about feeding and clean water, so it is not as simple as handing out money. Ruth has found a group of voluntary nurses running a welfare outreach programme who can help these children. Their information is photographed. Ruth is arranging to give them some of the donated money and they will visit and support the families.

  • Support for an informal orphanage

Here is a photo of Elizabeth, a nurse in Monrovia who has taken in 14 Ebola orphans. She works with Ruth, and Ruth found out that Elizabeth was struggling to pay her rent of US$150 per month. Ruth has used donated money to pay a month's rent for them. She has also helped Elizabeth to open a bank account to receive a further grant to cover some future expenses. It is usual in Liberia to be paid in cash and take the money straight to one's landlord. There is little security.

  • Christmas at ELWA-3...

Ruth has let me know that she's used some of your donations to provide a Christmas party for the orphans who's families received grants. Ruth provided transport, drinks and a present for each child. The youngest child pictured is just two months old and Ruth is hoping to be able to help provide infant formula.

  • Good news on how your donations are being used.....

Ruth has had the help of Head Nurse Sam and Social Worker Emmanuelle, pictured below. They have kept a list of survivors from ELWA 3 including orphans who have been taken in by local families. As per MSF's policy, Ruth has not been allowed to go and meet these people due to risk of infection in the community - she is required to stay in the hospital and staff accommodation.

Sam and Emmanuelle have visited the families and given Ruth lists of those in need of support to care for orphans. The heads of the families have then been brought to meet Ruth and she has given them donations of US$40 per child. Some of these heads of families are only 23 or 24 years old, and have taken in up to 12 children. Food is not cheap in Liberia, most people have a poor diet and crowded housing, living from hand to mouth without the security of having a bank account. There is no state welfare system, orphans are dependent on extended family, friends and charity-run orphanages.

We feel that the money has gone to the right people, because they have been identified from official records and been visited to check their circumstances. Sam and Emmanuelle have ensured the best possible level of accountability for the donors.

So far, US$2000 out of the $3400 has been used. There are many more people who can be helped, and there is a plan to buy Christmas presents for the children.

The fund is still open and Ruth can continue to use as many donations as are given. She can access the money immediately it is donated.

The photos on the "gallery" page show the heads of families receiving the money, and giving notes of thanks.

Thank you again to everyone who has helped.

  • Update from Ruth at ELWA 3

      6 December 2014
    Main image

Ruth is working in a co-ordination role at the Ebola management centre. She's supervising large numbers of staff, running pharmacy supplies and arranging transfers of patients who don't have Ebola to other hospitals. The number of Ebola cases has dropped in Monrovia and Ruth's team are able to provide more intensive treatment to the patients and social support, as well as outreach to other areas where Ebola rates may be rising. There is an election coming up and prevention of infection at public events is needed.

  • Update for 15/11/2014

      15 November 2014

Thanks to all the generous donors, Ruth has US$3500 to use to help Ebola victims in Liberia. She is currently having a stopover with friends in Germany, as you see from the photo which I have uploaded. The she will have training days in Brussels, before heading to Monrovia next week. Ruth has a number of contacts and local knowledge that will help her make good use of the money. The work will be hard and Ruth has made a huge personal commitment in doing this. Please forward her your good wishes while she is away. You may message her via our facebook page if you wish: http://www.facebook.com/EbolaRuth

  • Update for 14/10/2014

      14 October 2014

Ruth has just been advised that she will be going to MSF's Ebola centre at ELWA, near Monrovia in Liberia. She is heading there (via training in Brussels) on 17th November. She's pleased to be going to a familiar area, but it will be onerous work. She asked me to post this link which shows some pictures from ELWA hospital. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/in-pictures-ebola-virus-9637099.html

  • Update for 09/10/2014

      9 October 2014

Thank you to all the generous donors. When I worked in Liberia I often knew that when patients were in hospital, their children may be starving; then when they were discharged from hospital, the whole family may go hungry and sleep rough. There was little social care available. Children are particularly vulnerable to harm when their parent is ill or dies. Because Ruth will have this money, she will be able to help meet some of these needs. The donations and ""likes"" for the facebook page are also a good way of showing support for Ruth in this difficult work.
