Flood destroys predator traps - help us buy more!

Our predator traps were washed away in the recent floods. Help Ashley-Rakahuri Rivercare group buy more traps to protect endangered birds.

Canterbury

The Ashley-Rakahuri Rivercare Group in North Canterbury engages in the protection and enhancement of braided river birds and their habitat on the Ashley-Rakahuri River.

For some 16 years we have protected an 18km stretch of the river with traps to eliminate introduced predators, so that highly endangered braided river birds can safely breed and raise chicks, including such iconic braided river species as the ngutupare (wrybill), tarapiroe (black-fronted tern), tarāpuka (black-billed gull) and the pohowera (banded dotterel).

As a consequence of this work, braided river birds are holding their own on the Ashley and even increasing in numbers slightly, compared with gradual to catastrophic decline (depending on the species) on unprotected rivers.

The recent Canterbury floods swept away more than 100 of our predator traps. We need your help to pay for more traps to be installed before the breeding season commences in September.

Use of funds

To buy more predator traps to replace more than 100 lost in the Canterbury floods. These traps help protect highly endangered native birds. Any excess funds will support the group's conservation work generally.

Ashley River Clean-up  9 July 2021

In addition to raising funds to replace the predator traps lost in the recent funds, the Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare Group invites people to join a river-clean-up from 9.30am, Sunday 25th July. The floods have swept a lot of rubbish into the river and we're organising teams to clean it up.

Volunteers must RSVP by following this link: https://forms.gle/kW2D4snUfK3CJ8Ui9

Volunteers will be organised by team leaders in 4WD vehicles with trailers. There will be skips in meeting areas for rubbish collection.

The terrain will be tough and overgrown so volunteers must be physically fit and eager to get a little rough and dirty!

Please bring your own thick gardening gloves, gumboots or sturdy tramping or work boots, water bottles and sensible clothes for the weather and terrain.

The meeting area is: Rest Area on the Northern Bank

of the Ashley River SH1 Bridge

The day: Arrive between 9.30am-9.45 for a Health and Safety Briefing. There has been some hazardous waste spotted around the river so please make sure to attend the briefing especially if you're bringing your children along.

Clean-up starts at 10am and will run until 1pm.
