Habitat for Humanity- Christchurch

  • Cutting and styling hair to make a difference.

      26 February 2015

He calls himself the hair gypsy - Kiwi Jerome Wiersma has been travelling the world with just his scissors and comb, cutting hair for free.

The freelance Christchurch hairstylist is spending 365 days on the road starting in South America, cutting up a storm and raising money for quake-hit Christchurch.

"If I can take 12 months out of my life to help out some other people it would be a fantastic thing," he says.

Brazil is bathed in World Cup fever, but Mr Wiersma's unique story has still attracted the attention of local media - his story splashed all over national TV in Brazil.

"My main objective is to do at least one haircut a day but beyond that to raise $365,000 for Habitat for Humanity, for the rebuild in Christchurch for the 21 homes they are building," he says.

The hair gypsy has posted his photos of his travels on Instagram and can be seen cutting hair in the street on Copacabana Beach, in the native rainforests and at the Iguacu Falls on the border of Argentina.

After South America he will journey to the Big Apple, where he is booked to cut hair at New York Fashion Week and will continue to cut hair on the street.
