Toon Andrews has been diagnosed with a Stage 4 Malignant Glioblastoma

Waikato

Toon was suffering from a constant headache for a couple days. He went to his GP after day 2 to be told “it’s just a headache but come back if it gets any worse”.

Toon was still suffering with his headache on day 4 and also quite quickly became weak on the right hand side of his body. That night he was taken up to the Emergency Department at his local Hospital and within a matter of hours he was taken for a CT scan which discovered he had blood on the brain. Later the next day an MRI scan was done which showed he had a lesion in the brain.

Toon was admitted and put on steroids to help reduce the pressure building in his head. The next day it was decided the steroids weren’t working quickly enough so Toon was taken into surgery to have a shunt put in to drain the fluid and relieve the pressure that way. He was left to recover for a few days before going back into surgery to have his biopsy done.

A week later Toon was presented with the devastating news that he had cancer.

Due to the location of Toon’s tumour surgery is not an option to help remove it as it sits too closely to the brainstem and surgeons believe the risk is too great and more damage would possibly be created.

Instead Toon will undergo Radiation treatment everyday (Mon-Fri) for 6 weeks and 8 months of Chemotherapy.

Toon is and an only child who sadly lost his mother to a tragic car accident 3 years ago. He is supported by his Father Garth and extended family.

Toon is remaining positive and is in good spirits. He is determined to beat his illness and is also looking into supporting clinical trials as well.

November Update on Toon  1 December 2015

Great insight from Toon's last visit to the Neurosurgeon, the shunt/pump that has been installed will stay in place as the pressure from the growth of the tumour has caused the natural drainage channel to be compressed and blocked. The shunt/pump installed bypasses this compressed area and drains the brain fluid onto the stomach. It is hoped that if the tumour shrinks in size then the natural drainage channel will reopen, at which time the shunt/pump can be removed.

Also discussed with the Neurosurgeon was the possibility of operating to remove the tumour. However, it is his opinion that there is nothing to be gained from an operation at this time as Toon still has movement, sight, hearing, speech and memory. Because of the tumours location it is more than likely that one or more of those functions will be affected if they operate. Toons progress continues to be monitored closely.
