Help for Toon

  • November Update on Toon

      1 December 2015

Great insight from Toon's last visit to the Neurosurgeon, the shunt/pump that has been installed will stay in place as the pressure from the growth of the tumour has caused the natural drainage channel to be compressed and blocked. The shunt/pump installed bypasses this compressed area and drains the brain fluid onto the stomach. It is hoped that if the tumour shrinks in size then the natural drainage channel will reopen, at which time the shunt/pump can be removed.

Also discussed with the Neurosurgeon was the possibility of operating to remove the tumour. However, it is his opinion that there is nothing to be gained from an operation at this time as Toon still has movement, sight, hearing, speech and memory. Because of the tumours location it is more than likely that one or more of those functions will be affected if they operate. Toons progress continues to be monitored closely.

  • Update on Toon

      27 October 2015

Toon is progressing very well, he has a little discomfort from the daily Chemotherapy and the Radiation and is a little tired and sleeping more but everything is progressing as well as can be expected.

The Ketogenic diet has been a challenge, but Toon has mastered the change of food and his body is in a state where it produces ketones. This is when the body uses fat instead of carbohydrates as fuel, simply because you have starved your body of the carbohydrate supply.

  • Update on Toon's Treatment and Trial

      12 October 2015

Toon has been asked and accepted into a cancer trial being conducted by the research Oncologists at the Waikato Hospital. This trial was proposed because it may help the radiation and chemotherapy on this type of cancer. In this trial Toon is put on a Ketogenic Diet to put his body in a state of ketoses, this is when the body produces ketones. It is hoped that in this state the radiotherapy and chemotherapy will improve the tumour control and make the treatment more effective.

Toon's imagery scans from Trinity and all relevant information have been sent to Neurologist Surgeon Charles Teo at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, he was trained in America and reputed to be the best neurosurgeon. Toon is now waiting for his assessment as to whether surgery is an option. It is hoped that surgery is an option as this gives Toon the best prognosis.
