Help me represent New Zealand at the 2015 Junior World Boxing Championships in Russia

  • Request for your Givealittle support to help get me to Taiwan for a boxing championship

      13 September 2016
    Main image

I am once again seeking financial support to get to an international boxing tournament, this time in Taiwan in October 2016.

My new a Givealittle page, here: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/presidentscupboxing

I am a fifteen year old Kerikeri High School Year 11 student, and have invited by the Chinese Taipei Boxing Association to return to Taiwan this year for the 2016 President's Cup Schoolboys Boxing Tournament, to be held at the Pingtung County Stadium in Taiwan on October 22-26, 2016.

I am a current and 3x New Zealand Boxing Champion (2014, 2015, 2016), a 2x Golden Gloves winner (2014, 2015), and a current Australian Golden Gloves title holder. My achievements in amateur Olympic-style boxing to date include:

Winner: 2013 North Island Novice Championships, 57kg Male Cadet Novice

Winner: 2014 North Island Novice Championships, 63kg Male Cadet Novice

Winner: 2014 North Island Golden Gloves, 63kg Male Cadet Open

Winner: 2014 Central North Island Championships, 63kg Male Cadet Open

Winner: 2014 Auckland Boxing Championships, 63kg Male Cadet Open

Winner: 2014 Boxing NZ National Championships (Queenstown), 63kg Male Cadet Open

Winner: 2015 North Island Golden Gloves, 66kg Male Junior Open

Selected: 2015 NZ Representative to Junior World Boxing Championships (Russia), 66kg Male Junior Open

Winner: 2015 Boxing NZ National Championships (Invercargill), 70kg Male Junior Open

Winner: 2015 President's Cup (Taiwan), 70kg Male Junior Open

Winner: 2016 Australia Vs NZ Dual Match (Hamilton), 70kg Male Junior Open

Winner: 2016 Auckland Championships, 70kg Male Junior Open

Winner: 2016 Southland Championships, 70kg Male Junior Open

Winner: 2016 Boxing New Zealand National Championships (Rotorua), 75kg Male Junior Open

Winner: 2016 Australian National Open Golden Gloves (Brisbane), 75kg Male Junior Open

As the President's Cup Boxing Championship tournament in Taiwan is self-funded, I am looking for any kind of support to make his dream happen.

The total cost of the trip to Taiwan is estimated to be $2000, including airfares, accommodation, food, local transport, insurance and pocket money.

Please take a look an my new a Givealittle page, here: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/presidentscupboxing

Any amount you would kindly consider as a contribution would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Kyle Chen

  • I'm a newly minted Kiwi ready to represent New Zealand

Today I became a New Zealand Citizen. The private ceremony was conducted by Jill Topliss JP of Paihia and held at the foot of the flagpole at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, on the very spot where 175 years ago the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and under which New Zealand became part of the British Empire.

  • Sunday Devotions: 6km run, Haruru Falls to Waitangi

      19 July 2015

This afternoon I ran the Haruru Falls/Waitangi Track, near Paihia in Northland. Starting from the Haruru Falls end, the track follows the bush-clad banks of the Waitangi River and includes a boardwalk through the mangroves. The final part of the track runs along the edge of the Waitangi Golf Course and finishes opposite the Waitangi Treaty grounds.

My AIBA Competition Record Book arrived today, also known as the 'Blue Book'. Once my registration has been completed with AIBA, the International Boxing Association, this Blue Book will replace my current Boxing New Zealand Record Book and allow me to compete at both domestic and international boxing competitions! (AIBA Technical Rule 2.2.3.1.1 states: "A Boxer will not be allowed to compete in any AIBA competition unless such Boxer possesses a valid up-to-date Boxer’s AIBA Competition Record Book in which such Boxer must be certified as fit to box by a qualified Doctor as approved by the presiding Ringside Doctor".)

Today and tomorrow I am at Ringside Gym in Hamilton training with the other Junior Worlds Team reps and Youth Commonwealth Games reps. We were up for a run at 6:30am this morning! I'm ready to spend the weekend working hard to prep myself for St Petersburg and the bouts I have coming up in New Zealand as part of my buildup. Thanks to the Supercity crew for bringing me down with them from Auckland to Hamilton! I'll be back in Auckland with Coach Harry Otty on Sunday evening, then will spend a few days training at Spartan Boxing Club and doing odd jobs at the North Harbour Boxing Association/New Zealand Boxing Academy (who have kindly offered to contribute to my fundraising campaign for Russia). Team work! (Photo courtesy Ryan Henry).

Big thank you and appreciation to Sonatane! I had the upper hand on that day, but I know you will be working hard in the gym, and you won't ever let me get away so easily again.

I'll be back at Kerikeri Community Fitness Centre this week and concentrating on conditioning rather than strength training... so plenty of shadow sparring, and interval training together with high-intensity punch-out drills on the heavy bag.
