NEW CAUSE 2017: Help me get to the Bahamas for the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games! Please see: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/bahamas2017

My name is Kyle Chen and I need your help to fulfill my goal of competing at the 2016 President's Cup Boxing Tournament, in Pingtung, Taiwan, 22~26 October 2016
I have recently won my third New Zealand National boxing title, and was a Gold medal winner in the 75kg Junior Male division at the 2016 Australian National Open Golden Glove tournament, in Brisbane Australia.
My goals include making selection to the New Zealand boxing team to compete next year at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, and ultimately to represent New Zealand at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
An important part of my buildup is being able to compete and gain experience at international tournaments that provide strong competition in my age group. I competed at last year's President Cup, winning the 70kg Junior title, from a field of 13 boxers.
I am a fifteen year old Year 11 student at Kerikeri High School, in the Bay of Islands. I first became involved with boxing as a way to keep fit for rugby.
I entered my first boxing tournament at the North Island Novice Championships, in Rotorua in August 2013, where, after two bouts, I won first place in the Cadet 57kg division.
My achievements in amateur Olympic-style boxing to date include:
Winner: 2013 North Island Novice Championships, 57kg Male Cadet Novice
Winner: 2014 North Island Novice Championships, 63kg Male Cadet Novice
Winner: 2014 North Island Golden Gloves, 63kg Male Cadet Open
Winner: 2014 Central North Island Championships, 63kg Male Cadet Open
Winner: 2014 Auckland Boxing Championships, 63kg Male Cadet Open
Winner: 2014 Boxing NZ National Championships (Queenstown), 63kg Male Cadet Open
Winner: 2015 North Island Golden Gloves, 66kg Male Junior Open
Selected: 2015 NZ Representative to Junior World Boxing Championships (Russia), 66kg Male Junior Open
Winner: 2015 Boxing NZ National Championships (Invercargill), 70kg Male Junior Open
Winner: 2015 President's Cup (Taiwan), 70kg Male Junior Open
Winner: 2016 Australia Vs NZ Dual Match (Hamilton), 70kg Male Junior Open
Winner: 2016 Auckland Championships, 70kg Male Junior Open
Winner: 2016 Southland Championships, 70kg Male Junior Open
Winner: 2016 Boxing New Zealand National Championships (Rotorua), 75kg Male Junior Open
Winner: 2016 Australian National Open Golden Gloves (Brisbane), 75kg Male Junior Open
My competitive nature and love of boxing drives me to give it my all every training, to push beyond my limits and to be the best that I can be.
I can think of nothing I would rather do than stand on the podium in Taiwan, knowing that I have done my country, club, school and my family and friends proud.
I especially appreciate and thank my coach Rusty Porter, my club Kaeo Boxing Club, the Auckland Boxing Association, and my school Kerikeri High School in the Bay of Islands, Northland, New Zealand...
Thank you for considering my request for funding assistance. .
Yours sincerely
Kyle Chen
Mission Accomplished! 30 October 2016
I got a bye in the preliminary round and entered the President's Cup tournament in the Under 19 Youth Male 75kg quarter-finals, which I won unanimously on points, 3:0, followed by a semi-final win by unanimous 3:0 points decision.
In the final I met an experienced 18yo Youth boxer from Taiwan (who will be representing the Chinese-Taipei boxing team at next month's AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships 2016 in Russia).
My final in Taiwan was the toughest battle I've had for a while - he was a strong opponent. But I felt fitter than him, was able to use my experience.
The final was a hard contest, but I came away with another unanimous 3:0 points decision win.
I would like to acknowledge my coache(s) and thank all my supporters, including Coach Lo and the team from Pingtung that looked after me throughout the tournament and assited me with everything, Williams Fu who made it all possible, Tommy Chen of Inxtron for the hospitality in Taipei, Akitio.com for the airfare sponsorship to Taiwan, Dean at Roundabout Distributors, Mandy and the team at Recreational Services (Waipapa), my brother James, and Sumin, and my Mum and the people of Wairoa, Ya-Chieh and all my family in Taiwan, Rex Jenkins and family and the Central North Island Boxing Association, Auckland Boxing Association, Fili Maka and family, Greg & Kylee for help with accommodation in Auckland, the Robin Thorin Trust in Northland for their substantial support throughout 2016, Countdown supermarket (Waitangi), Liz Osokin for her long-term campaign support, all my friends at Kerikei High School and everywhere, Paul my old rugby coach, all those who donated on Givalittle, my Dad, and especially my coach Rusty Porter at Kaeo Boxing Club and the team at Northland Boxing Gym.
Thank you all!
