The Tangkahan Effect

  • Capturing a moment of a lifetime - Camera Purchase

      26 April 2015
    Main image

Our aim for the next fundraiser is to raise money to purchase the perfect camera to film the births of the 3 expectant Ele's.

How exciting would it be to watch Augustine give birth in September 2015!???

We have 60 days to raise enough funds to purchase and build our camera.

The camera will need to live in a water proof casing and because the electricity is unreliable we will be having a battery pack - generator, built.

We have professionals researching the best options, once we have more details as to the type of camera, we will share them with you.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead.

Join us, along with the Tangkahan locals and plant a tree for Earth Day! On Tuesday 22nd April, many people in the small village will join together for a trek in to the Jungle, where they will plant fruit trees.

These fruit trees will help ensure that the Orangutan, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, Horn Bill and many more wild animals remain close to the village.

    Help us help the earth!

For only $20 you too can plant a tree !!!! Donate now! Fancy being able to say that you contributed by planting a Durian tree in Sumatran Jungle for an Orangutan!

    BIG Thank you - Update!!

A big thanks to all of you who generously donated to our Earth Day 2015 - Plant a Tree day.

Along with a bunch of locals, we planted 50 trees!!!

      8 April 2015

The Tangkahan Effect endeavoured to take 4 village animals, Boute, Mate, Milo and Lukas and get them healthy!

In this picture of Mate you can see the fleas on his face - they had riddled his body.

We organised for a vet in the City (approx 4-5 hours drive away) to visit the village and castrate the 2 cats and 2 dogs.

They have ongoing flea treatment, intestinal worm treatment and have all been castrated.

You can meet the 4-furries through our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.468715886619894.1073741831.434160130075470&type=3

  • Feb Fast For Elephants - February 2015

      8 April 2015

Our first fundraiser for The Tangkahan Effect was Feb Fast for Elephants.

We hoped to raise funds for shade sails and food for 8 rescue elephants in Tangkahan, Indonesia. 3 of these elephants are currently pregnant.

The Tangkahan Effect consists of 4 people, 4 friends. Nat and Christie are two community minded travellers, passionate about the well being of a small village in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Hendra and Edy are 2 local Rangers who wish to protect their village and surrounding jungle by educating and rasinign awareness through eco-tourism.

Nat and Christie have been lucky enough to visit this village several times, over the past few years, and were overwhelmed with the effect it had on them with it’s isolated location, unique community spirit and it’s tranquil surrounds. They aim to increase the welfare of Tangkahan alongside the proud and independent villagers.

In TTE first fundraiser they aimed to provide shade (through shade sails) to the 8 rescue elephants who were once at risk, due to conflict over land and vegetation. They also aimed to supplement the diet of 3 pregnant elephants who require additional fruits and vegetables to maintain optimal health.

They decided to fundraise by participating in an alcohol free Feb Fast. They'd previously found that the amount of money that they were spending in a night out could instead be used to benefit a worthy cause.

February was a very social month for them including, family reunions, birthdays and engagement parties, so this was a huge challenge for a Bintang loving, champagne drinking duo.

Needless to say the month passed, funds were raised. Shade sails were taken over to the Village. Money was delivered which is currently helping assist with materials for an elephant clinic and for additional food for the pregnant Ele's.

A huge thank you to those who contributed to Feb Fast for Ele's. Needless to say these gentle giants require enormous amounts of food and materials which put a great deal of pressure on the locals. Funds can still be donated to them at any time. Should you wish the money you choose to donate to go directly to them, please write int he comments / message section of the donation page where you'd like the money to go to.

If you'd like to 'visit' the Ele's through our facebook page, you can check out the progress, the delivery of the shade sails and the productivity that it helped bring to this little Elephant rescue camp in March 2015.
