Raise Funds to travel and compete in the Valerie Liukin Invitational (Mens Artistic Gymnastics) held in Texas, USA from 11-13 December 2015

Auckland

I am raising funds on behalf of Frikkie Delport to help him pursue his dream of an International Gymnastics career.

Frikkie has freshly graduated (2014) from WINTEC centre for Sport Science & Human Performance having completed a bachelor degree in Sport and Exercise Science; he is a full time Senior Men's Artistic Gymnast as well as both a Junior Men's Artistic Gymnastics Coach and Judge. Currently Frikkie trains 20+ hours each week with the aspiration of representing New Zealand at the 2018 XXI Commonwealth Games and many other international competitions along the way.

Previously Frikkie has represented New Zealand in Men’s Levels 7, 8 and 9 in Australia at State and National Championships and has performed extremely well, each time placing in the top 10 all around and achieving podium placings on the individual apparatus (Floor, Pommel, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar)

Frikkie has just been selected as a member of the New Zealand Men’s Artistic Gymnastics team to represent New Zealand at the Valerie Luikin Invitational in Texas, USA later on this year (December). A total of 20 athletes have been selected across 4 levels of competition (level 8, 9, Junior International and Level 10 Open Men’s), Frikkie has qualified to compete in one of the 4 spots available in the New Zealand Level 10 Open Men’s team. This is a big step forward for Frikkie towards his goals and he is very excited to be representing his country at this level.

Some information about the competition -

The competition is held in honour of world and Olympic champion Valeri Liukin, who has reached legendary status as both an athlete and coach. Highlights of his career include the 1987 European all-around title, two gold medals at the 1988 Olympics, and pioneering the triple back on floor exercise. Liukin, a native of Kazakhstan, also a skill named after him on high bar (full-twisting layout Tkatchev). More information on woga.net/valeri-liukin-invitational

Since 1996, the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) has proudly hosted the Valeri Liukin Invitational, which attracts top teams from across the USA and around the world. As one of the largest and longest running International competitions in the United States, the Valeri Liukin Invitational brings together a magnificent field of international competitors and is an outstanding opportunity to compete with future Olympic stars.

Cost of the trip:

The trip costs $4,500.00 and this covers flights, transportation and competition fees.

Uniform, food and emergency/back up funds are estimated to be another $1000.00

A total cost of $5500 for the trip.

This trip is arranged by Gymsports New Zealand, the controlling body of gymnastics in New Zealand. You can visit their website at www.gymsportsnz.com

The dates of travel will be from the 8th -19th December 2015.

Any donation will be a huge step forward for him towards achieving his goals and will be greatly appreciated :)

You can see a little more of him on his Instagram page - https://instagram.com/thebeardedgymnast/

Willem Delport's involvement (page creator)

I am his father and have been supporting him as a gymnast for the past 17 Years. He had a major setback 2.5 years ago when he injured his shoulder while competing and couldn't train and compete for 2 years. He has shown major commitment and dedication to his sport to overcome this injury (and the shoulder operation that followed to re-attach his Pectoral muscle) to return to Gymnastics at a competitive level.

2 Months to go  6 October 2015

The last two months have been a very busy time in preparation for the 2015 New Zealand National Championships. Three weeks out from competition, all competition routines were now set and the grind began. Repeating routines over and over until they were as close to perfect before competition day as possible. Days out from competition final training sessions were happening finishing it off with a training session at the competition venue. The work was done; it was now all down to competition day.

First day of competition brought with it a lot of anxiousness and excitement as the Australian team was also present, competing for the Trans Tasman Cup. The New Zealand Team (and 3 fellow Liukin Cup Team Members) held up a good fight and managed to win over the strong Australian team, taking the Trans Tasman Cup.

As an individual Frikkie took first place in the all around competition as well as contributing to the New Zealand team’s first place over the Australian Team. Frikkie also achieved five podium placing’s out of the six individual apparatus; placing 1st on Floor and Horizontal bar and 2nd on Pommel Horse, Rings and Parallel Bars.

Frikkie achieved an overall score that has made him eligible to move into the level 10 Senior International category following the NZ National Championships. This has been a lifetime goal of Frikkie’s and is a really huge achievement for him. Because he has qualified for this level he is now also eligible to Trial for the 2016 Pacific Rim Championships as a Senior Gymnast.

“More than 300 of the world’s best gymnasts will compete at the 2016 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships at Everett’s Xfinity Arena next April 8-10.

The three-day event is expected to feature athletes from more than 15 countries, including Canada, China, Japan, Russia and the United States, competing in Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, and Trampoline.”

The trial for this event will occur 1 week prior to departure to the

Valerie Liukin Cup in Texas.

At the NZ National Championships, Frikkie was approached by the Mens Artistic Gymnastics Sport Development Committee, inviting him to take on the role of team captain during the USA tour in December.

So…

A very busy and successful couple of months, topped off with great results at the NZ National Championships. It is an end to the domestic competitive season but this does not mean it is time to relax, the Liukin cup is fast approaching and there is a lot of up skilling to do to meet the routine requirements. Let’s hope the period leading up to the trials for Pacifics and the Liukin cup are as successful and productive as the past few months.

That’s all for now, more updates will be posted in the following weeks as the build up to Texas begins!

But first a week off from training to rest and recover :) …
