The last two months have been a very busy time in preparation for the 2015 New Zealand National Championships. Three weeks out from competition, all competition routines were now set and the grind began. Repeating routines over and over until they were as close to perfect before competition day as possible. Days out from competition final training sessions were happening finishing it off with a training session at the competition venue. The work was done; it was now all down to competition day.

First day of competition brought with it a lot of anxiousness and excitement as the Australian team was also present, competing for the Trans Tasman Cup. The New Zealand Team (and 3 fellow Liukin Cup Team Members) held up a good fight and managed to win over the strong Australian team, taking the Trans Tasman Cup.

As an individual Frikkie took first place in the all around competition as well as contributing to the New Zealand team’s first place over the Australian Team. Frikkie also achieved five podium placing’s out of the six individual apparatus; placing 1st on Floor and Horizontal bar and 2nd on Pommel Horse, Rings and Parallel Bars.

Frikkie achieved an overall score that has made him eligible to move into the level 10 Senior International category following the NZ National Championships. This has been a lifetime goal of Frikkie’s and is a really huge achievement for him. Because he has qualified for this level he is now also eligible to Trial for the 2016 Pacific Rim Championships as a Senior Gymnast.

“More than 300 of the world’s best gymnasts will compete at the 2016 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships at Everett’s Xfinity Arena next April 8-10.

The three-day event is expected to feature athletes from more than 15 countries, including Canada, China, Japan, Russia and the United States, competing in Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, and Trampoline.”

The trial for this event will occur 1 week prior to departure to the

    Valerie Liukin Cup in Texas.

At the NZ National Championships, Frikkie was approached by the Mens Artistic Gymnastics Sport Development Committee, inviting him to take on the role of team captain during the USA tour in December.

    So…

A very busy and successful couple of months, topped off with great results at the NZ National Championships. It is an end to the domestic competitive season but this does not mean it is time to relax, the Liukin cup is fast approaching and there is a lot of up skilling to do to meet the routine requirements. Let’s hope the period leading up to the trials for Pacifics and the Liukin cup are as successful and productive as the past few months.

That’s all for now, more updates will be posted in the following weeks as the build up to Texas begins!

But first a week off from training to rest and recover :) …
