A small island school, a historic first AIMS Games team, and a community determined to make it happen.
Great Barrier Island, Auckland
This year, Kaitoke School on Aotea Great Barrier Island is making history by sending our very first team to the AIMS Games.
For most schools, getting to AIMS means jumping on a bus. For us, every student, coach, bag and piece of gear must first travel 100km across the Hauraki Gulf before the journey even begins. Ferries, flights, accommodation and transport make attending national events incredibly challenging for our small island community.
Despite this, our students have worked tirelessly to make their dream a reality. They have opened and run their own school café, Brewed Awakening, completed barista training, sold raffle tickets, hosted fundraisers and given up countless hours to raise money.
Our team includes 11 Year 7 and 8 students competing in Mixed Rippa Rugby, along with talented young golfer Jake Langford. These students have shown determination, resilience and commitment every step of the way.
We have done everything we can to fundraise locally, but with a small population there is only so much support we can draw on. We still have a long way to go to cover the costs of getting our team to Tauranga.
Your donation will help cover travel, accommodation, transport and tournament costs, giving our students an opportunity they will remember for the rest of their lives.
Thank you for helping us prove that living on a small island should never limit big dreams.
Kaitoke School is a unique, off-grid school nestled in the Kaitoke Valley on remote Aotea (Great Barrier Island). Find out more at www.kaitoke.school.nz
Every dollar raised will go directly towards getting our students to the AIMS Games, covering the significant costs of island travel, accommodation, transport, meals and tournament participation.
