A nationwide effort to save EVERY Kaimanawa horse that is due to be removed during the 2026 Kaimanawa Horse Muster.
Nationwide
The 149 Kaimanawa Wild Horses – 149 Lives Saved project is a bold, time-sensitive mission to rescue, gentle, and rehome EVERY Kaimanawa horse from the 2026 government muster. Currently just four applications have been received, leaving 145 horses facing an uncertain fate.
Funds will be primarily allocated as $1000 Stallion Subsidies and $1000 KLF Initial Handling Subsidies (to help owners that need financial support to pay for an experienced trainer to do the initial handling for them).
There will also be excess horses with no homes to go to. Any unallocated funds will be dedicated to this purpose - $3500 saves a filly or mare or $4250 saves a colt or stallion.
Any unassigned horses will:
• Be owned by KLF
• Have all rehoming costs covered (ie purchase, gelding, transport)
• Be placed with a professional KLF Approved Trainer for initial handling
• Post taming, will be matched with an owner or scholarship rider/trainer
The KLF Excess Horse initiate is led by Kaimanawa Legacy Foundation, alongside a team of experienced KLF Approved Trainers. Their properties are fully equipped with the facilities, experience, and passion to give these horses a future, but they can’t do it without your help.
Be part of something lifechanging, for them, and for us all.
