279 Wild Kaimanawa Horses. 279 Days. 279 Lives Saved.

$59,162 of $125,000 goal
Given by 382 generous donors in around 5 months

A nationwide effort to save EVERY Kaimanawa horses that is due to be culled during the early July Kaimanawa Horse Muster.

Nationwide

The 279 Kaimanawa Wild Horses – 279 Day Project is a bold, time-sensitive mission to rescue, gentle, and rehome EVERY excess Kaimanawa horses from the government muster. During the April Muster, 148 horses were removed from the wild, and KHH have received another 69 applications for the July Muster. This leaves 62 facing an uncertain fate.

The KLF Excess Horse initiate is led by Kaimanawa Legacy Foundation, alongside a team of experienced KLF Approved Trainers. Their properties are fully equipped with the facilities, experience, and passion to give these horses a future—but they can’t do it without your help.

Some funds will be allocated to stockpiling horses if trainer spots fill (like they did in the April Muster), or to pay $1000 Initial Handling subsidies to owners that need financial support to pay for an experienced trainer to do the initial handling.

There will also be excess horses with no homes to go too. Any unallocated funds will be dedicated to this purpose - $2500 saves a juvenile filly, $3250 saves a juvenile colt, $3500 saves a mature mare or $4250 saves a mature stallion.

These unassigned horses will:

• Be owned by KLF

• Have all rehoming costs covered (ie purchase, gelding, transport)

• Be placed with a professional KLF Approved Trainer for initial handling

• Post taming, will be matched with an owner or scholarship rider/trainer

Be part of something life-changing—for them, and for us all.
