2019 Inline Ferns - National Women's Inline Hockey Team - World Roller Games - Barcelona, Spain

In July of 2019 the New Zealand Senior Women’s Inline Hockey Team, otherwise known as the Inline Ferns, will be attending the World Roller Games in Barcelona, Spain.

The World Roller Games are held every two years and serve as the World Championships for 11 Roller sports, of which Inline Hockey is included. The event is the largest of its kind and will see over 4000 athletes from 115 countries taking part to determine the World Champions in the respective disciplines.

The Inline Hockey World Championships are an annual tournament organised by the governing body, World Skate, with the 2019 edition being held in conjunction with the World Roller Games. The Championships serve as the sports highest profile annual international tournament and attract the world’s best hockey players from multiple nations.

The 2019 edition of the World Championships will be held from the 4th -14th of July 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. A team of 12 players and 2 goalies have been selected to attend this tournament.

At the 2018 World Championships the Inline Ferns finished a creditable 7th place overall in an extremely tough field.

The highlight of this tournament was a 1-1 draw with the eventual World Champions USA, losing only by way of a penalty shootout. Unfortunately this loss kept the Ferns from a top 4 finish. The Inline Ferns also had a historical draw against Canada, both feats were groundbreaking for New Zealand Inline Hockey.

The team is currently working extremely hard to achieve the goal of a podium finish, something that is very much achievable by a team that is filled with both depth and skill.

How you can help? –

Due to the fact that Inline Hockey is a minority sport in New Zealand it means that each player must fully fund the costs associated with attending the World Championships. The cost for each player is currently estimated at approximately $5500.

Many players struggle to meet this goal financially and must fit numerous fundraisers around a busy training and work schedule.
