From holiday to horrendous injury. A massive head injury has left 42-year-old Karain partially sighted.
Waikato
On the 17th of July 2023, 42-year-old old, Karain Eketone and his wife Susan left Auckland for a cruise to Fiji. Karain had been working hard to grow his business as an electrician. This was a much-needed break. Upon arrival in Fiji, Karain and Susan spent one day walking to the end of a beach so Karain could enjoy some snorkelling. He chose a spot away from where boats were operating.
Karain was enjoying the warm water and snorkelling when he became aware that a powered boat was bearing down on him. In a desperate attempt to protect himself, he raised his arms to protect his head from the propeller. He was struck by the boat.
The propeller sliced through his wrist artery and nerve in his arm and opened his skull. At this point, he drowned. The man and two women on the boat tried to get Karain into the boat but he was too heavy for them. A man nearby saw what was happening and swam over to offer assistance. Together they were able to lift Karain back into the boat.
The man who came to assist them performed CPR and was able to bring Karain back to life. Because his heart had stopped the impact of the severed artery was minimised thus preventing him from bleeding out. This was addressed and Karain was transported to hospital with horrendous arm and head injuries.
Karain, drowned and was resuscitated, he flatlined 3 times on his mercy flight back to NZ. He has recovered but is now left partially sighted with a long road to recovery.
We are seeking support for his future
The funds raised will be used to support Karain's medical expenses and his adaptation to a new life
