For those of you who have been following us a long time, you may be wondering why we're fundraising to give out free bikes. Isn't that what we've always done?!?
Yes and no. Our services have always been free for those who need them, and hopefully always will be. We still give out free bikes to those who are referred to us via Red Cross or other community groups and schools.
But our costs have gone up. We no longer get as many donations of free helmets or locks. The councils and funders are all tightening their belts. And we want to support other groups like Free Ride and Motuhenga to support their neighbourhoods, which is where funders are focused.
So we now have a cost recovery model. Once a month over winter we have bike sales, where people pay what they can to buy a bike that has been lovingly repaired by our volunteers.
The 50 free bikes we hope to give out are for those who might feel shy or whakama about asking for a free bike, but aren't being referred to us by a community group.
The more donations we collect, the more bikes we hope to give out. 50 is the goal but imagine if we could give out 100 bikes before the end of the year!
Every dollar helps. And if you can't donate right now, please share. A personalised message from a friend means much more than us rambling on!
Thanks to all those who have already given and shared. Our team is incredibly appreciative of your support!
