8.5 month pregnant Ukrainian Mother forced from her home

  • What happened next

      25 August 2022

    Hi all,

Just to let you all know, Marina, Mikhail made it safely through to Austria, where a little baby girl was born, in suitably dramatic circumstances!

Now six months into the war they have settled down with Marina's Dad also joining them. Given the situation they are getting by as well as can be expected, with support from the Austrian government, some kind volunteers and finding what work they can in the local area.

Most importantly they are happy and healthy and looking forward to a day when they can go home.

Thank you ever so much for your support it was incredibly helpful, especially in the early days getting them to where they needed to be and helping provide for such a young family.

  • Safe in Austria

      9 March 2022

    Hey all,

Marina, Mikhail, and her Mum made an arduous 24 hour bus ride from Romania to Austria. Arriving 10 hours after the original arrival estimate. (I thought she must have had the baby in the back of the bus!)

Again they have accommodation and food been provided for them which is awesome. After taking a few days to rest and recover from the ordeal of getting from their home in Odessa, with painful separations from husbands and fathers. They will look to secure the next part of their journey. Keeping in mind that the baby is due any day now.

So still some nervous days ahead full of worry, sadness and the absence of loved ones and the uncertainty of what they can do once the baby arrives.

Please remember to share and contribute as you can.

    Many thanks

  • The generosity of strangers, humbling.

      3 March 2022

    Hi there

First of all thanks to all of you have contributed it is awesome and Marina is grateful, if a little abashed!

To everybody, please share this page as far and wide as you can.

Like all of us would be, Marina is uncomfortable to have a page like this all about her and being a normally private person she is both grateful and self-conscious.

We can all be very proud of Marina and her family, they have proved incredibly resilient and resourceful, managing through the awful situation and still finding the wherewithal for moments of laughter.

Once more some volunteers have helped the family on their journey and helped them move on to another town in Romania and where they have had another two nights in a hotel, I have seen some of the meals, I am actually a little jealous!

They have had yet more help from locals, who have been able to help secure transport to Austria and a place to stay when they get there.

It is amazing and humbling to see how much good there is in the world in response to the evil that has created the situation.

While Austria is a great and safe place, we are still unsure about how long they can stay and how long Marina and her family can rely on the awesome generosity that they have experienced so far.

We have to think about the long term, Marina remains heavily pregnant with the baby due any day and we don't know how long until she can go home to her husband. So to ensure their health and safety, with shelter and food, Mum, baby, and Mikhail will need ongoing support until the end of the horrible experience.

As such, I am also going to put my money where my mouth is, for every dollar contributed on this page I will match (up until the Bank Manager says no!).

It would never give me so much pleasure to sign for bankruptcy!!

So please contribute as you can but also share this post to all that you can

    share share share :)

  • They have crossed the border!!

    Good news!

Marina and Mikhail left in the early hours of Monday morning along with Marina's husband's parents, and travelled to the southern border with Romania.

They were lucky enough to find that the border crossing was incredibly quiet so moved quickly across to Romania. Young Mikhail provided a good laugh while lining up to be processed, wrapped up tightly against the cold. In such a tense moment it was great to hear that they managed to find some laughter.

They were moved on to the refugee camp and well feed before being transferred to a tent for the night. Luckily, they managed to make the right people aware of Marina's condition, with the baby due in March so any day now, who promptly moved them from the tent to a warm dry hotel in the neighboring town.

It is wonderful that Marina and her family have managed to get this far which is cause for celebration and tantamount to the strength of her and her family. Tempered with the knowledge that her husband is helping the people in his community get to safety from the bombing near their family home.

But the journey is far from over, decisions continue to be made and remade in this chaotic situation, so the next step in the journey remains unclear.

Front of mind is getting Marina to a place where she can have the baby in a safe and healthy environment while still taking care of Mikhail.

Please remember, and she will hate me for writing this, the Ukraine has some of the lowest incomes in Europe so while they work hard at home and manage to thrive. It is difficult to take what they have earnt into countries with higher costs of living, with higher prices for food and accommodation and no chance to earn an income.

  • Update Saturday 26th February (Ukraine Time)

      27 February 2022

Marina and Mikhail and her Mother have had to change their plans. The original ticket they had to go to Poland on Wednesday seemed to long away to be safe.

So they have changed options and started their journey towards the Romanian Border. Late on Saturday they arrived at Marina's husbands parents village to stay the night.

Shortly after they heard that all ongoing transport has been banned for Sunday so they have to stay another day before moving on.

They remain nervous and confused. With life changing decisions being made and remade throughout this tragedy as events unfold and new information comes to light.

Despite all the above in my last contact with Marina she was incredibly positive. She is an incredibly capable and resilient Woman and will do everything she can to keep her little boy and unborn baby safe.

My worry is that decisions will soon start to be taken out of their hands and they will be forced to do things that will not be best for the family.

I have offered to Marina to fly over and met her at the border, or as soon as I can (at my cost not yours). She has rejected that offer for now, but I will prepare so I can be ready to head over and do what I can to make sure Mum, bub, that sweet little boy and the rest of her family are safe.

I will keep you updated as best I can.
