Help page for Edwin Henry Dednam following a C4 spinal fracture
Wellington
For my family in South Africa things were finally coming together and there were new opportunities for them to start earning money having depleted their savings over the last three years.
Unfortunately earlier this week, my Dad has had a fall and has fractured his C4 after his bum knee gave way and he fell headfirst off a deck and landed awkwardly. There isn’t any permanent damage to his spinal cord from what we can tell.
Surgery to repair the damage has been deemed too dangerous and we are hoping the spinal cord trauma will heal and he will regain full function.
My mum Laura, is doing what she can with support from my brother but she has lost some of her sight and cannot drive.
My dad is still working and is the breadwinner at 73 and things have been tight over the last years following the Covid outbreak.
It’s tough to share the bad stuff and even more so to be telling people our family will be coming to them cap in hand for financial support.
I want to thank everyone for the support and care they have been wrapping around my family. A special mention for the staff at Edenvale Hospital and the team looking after my dad at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital
The beneficiary is my Dad Edwin Henry Dednam
Assist with the costs of care. Funds will be used towards a vehicle to assist with transporting my dad to his appointments once he is released from hospital, as well as in home care and financial aid for the family.
A mighty oak has fallen! 13 February 2023
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of my Father Edwin Henry Dednam, passing.
My mum Laura, my brother Sean and I are heartbroken. His Grandchildren, Michael, Josh, Dan Lexie, Rhino and Jayden will carry the tales we share and the love he had for them for their whole lives. While he leaves an empty seat at our table, and we will miss him so, he lives on in our hearts forever.
Edwin, Ed, Eddie, Pa, Pappa, Oupa, a good friend, tower of strength, a kind man, a brave man, a warrior.
Our hearts are full of the beautiful memories we created, and the loving legacy he leaves us.
“May the Valkyries welcome you and lead you through Odin's great battlefield. May they sing your name with love and fury, so that we might hear it rise from the depths of Valhalla and know that you've taken your rightful place at the table of kings. For a great man has fallen: A warrior. A chieftain. A father. A friend.
There do I see my father, my mother, and my brothers and my sisters. They bid me take my place among them in the halls of Valhalla... where the brave shall live forever.”
