Helping Ugandan kids get to school
International
This page is for some children in Uganda who need a helping hand on their way through life.
Evelina (12), Okello (7) Paul (5) were left by their parents in the care of relatives (i.e. abandoned), and the parents no longer support them. I know the children and their current caregivers personally and met their parents when they were still around.
Evelina lives with her Aunty Joy and Uncle Patrick, who also have children of their own. She wants to be a teacher. Okello and lives with his Aunty Christina and Uncle Vincent who also have children. They both live in Kampala the capital. Paul (Paulo) is the youngest and lives with his Jajja (Nana) in Katonga village about 1 1/2 hours out of Kampala. He is tough and bounces back from almost anything, he really wants to start school and to learn English. His aunties say he is very smart, he has a joke for any occasion.
In Uganda you need to pay for school, state funded schools are hard to find and badly funded. Evelina is at a school but it is very basic and she is not learning a lot. Okello is not at school due to lack of money for school fees. Paulo is not at preschool and never has been, he will soon be due to start primary.
Most schools in Uganda were closed for nearly 2 years by Government covid control orders, from March 2020 to January 2022. Many kids have missed 2 years even if they had money for fees available to them. These guys really needs some help to get learning properly.
I have met all 3 children in the past, they are my partner's niece and nephews. I will see them again in April 2022 when I visit Uganda.
School fees, uniforms, essential school supplies such as books and pens.
May 2023 update - this page is sadly closing! 3 May 2023
Hello and thanks again for your support!! We got to $1,366 of the $2,200 goal, this was enough to send the 3 children to school for 3 terms (Okello only managed two terms due to various logistical problems). That has honestly changed their lives already, you people are so kind.
The Givealitttle page has now closed for donations i.e. it is timed out.
The total cost of their tuition plus registration, uniforms, exercise books etc since March last year was approx NZ$1512 (3.3 million shillings) - see the payments summary table I have posted up. The next fees will be for term 2 (May - August), due this month. It works out to about $600 - $700 / term altogether for the 3 of them. They are all learning well at school and really happy to be there, although they are a couple of years behind their expected class for their age.
Their current schools are:
> Evelyn: N Janat Memorial Primary, Kyebando, Kampala
> Okello - Peace Modern school, Kayabwe, Mpigi District
> Paulo - Plato Childrens' School, Bukoto, Kampala
I would love it if you could like the facebook page I have set up, I can keep posting there: https://www.facebook.com/YoungUgandans

Webale nyo (thanks very much!), I am very touched by the kindness of strangers. I will be sure to post up some pictures of them when they start at school. Term 2 starts on 9th May so we will make sure they are enrolled and ready to go then.
Hi Mandy and Euan, thanks a lot that's super! Hope you are well. Their uncle Denis says the school will enrol them for next term which starts around mid April x
