My brave, kind and gentle friend Ian, battling a vicious cancer, needs some help to stay with us for as long as possible.
Pakuranga, Auckland
In August 2024, Ian received devastating news: he was diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, an aggressive cancer of the bile ducts in his liver. Without treatment, his life expectancy was 3 to 6 months, with treatment, it could be extended to 6 to 12 months. Due to delays in accessing a timely consultation, Ian and his family funded private treatment to maximise his survival time. They’ve paid over $160,000 for chemotherapy, immunotherapy, imaging, and specialist consultations.
However, things have changed. Immunotherapy has now failed and his tumours grown. He can’t work due to his rapidly progressing illness. Pemigatinib was identified as a new drug that may extend his life by a further 12 months, with a very small chance of an extra year. This medication is not publicly funded and costs $7,775 per three-week cycle. Continuous administration is required to maintain efficacy.
Ian and his family need $100,000 to fund 12 cycles of Pemigatinib. On top of this, there will be other associated medical expenses. After 12 cycles, the cost of Pemigatinib reduces to $50 per cycle. Ian remains committed to pursuing all options and hopes to continue his treatment for as long as possible with additional support.
Ian, a much loved father, husband, son, brother, friend and colleague whose kindness and integrity knows no bounds, has thus far fought hard with incredible courage, to beat the odds and with your help, for which he is gratefull, will continue to do so for as long as possible.
Ian, was a work colleague, became a friend and is more like family now. Ian and his wife are an integral part of my urban whanau.
The money will be spent on Pemigatinib which is potentially life enhancing but not publicly funded for a year, and consultations
